Every summer, 826LA students gather for an intensive five-day workshop called Words, Spoken. Taught by the incredible Dr. Ashaki Jackson, Words, Spoken is designed to give students the space and tools to examine themselves and explore their identities through several different types of poetry and writing.
This year, students were joined by guest writers, who shared their craft with students and invited them to challenge themselves by writing in new and exciting ways. Students wrote -- some of them for the first time -- manifestos, monologues, erasure poetry, image poetry, short stories, 'zines, and more. Students left the week with an expanded view of what writing can be, and with more confidence in themselves and their ability to call themselves writers.
Words, Spoken culminates with a reading, showcasing our students' powerful voices to their friends, family, and community. We invite you to read this book, and share in the journey of discovering more about who you are alongside the 826LA students.
