For seven weeks, the students of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Mary Hayes' English Language Skills class worked with 826LA as they wrote their own chapters in the style of Seedfolks. Seedfolks by Paul Fleischman is a series of vignettes that chronicle the transformation of an inner-city neighborhood into a true community. Each character transforms the abandoned lot into a community garden, and in the process, the characters also transform their lives and their neighborhood. The students were encouraged to use their personal experience in Boyle Heights to bring their stories to life. The students brought their characters to the garden during challenging times, giving them a chance to grow and change in positive ways and become a truly valued part of a community.
