25 years after the Rodney King beating, tenth-grade students at Alain LeRoy Locke Academy in Watts read Anna Deavere Smith's Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992. Her one-woman play and book anthologized the stories of the community members affected by the uprising following the acquittal of the police officers who perpetrated the beating.
The stories, poems, artwork, and comics in this book explore the sociocultural issues that surrounded the events of 1992 in Los Angeles, and the parallels that students make to their lives and the state of their community today.
