This book contains the adventures of students from 826LA’s Write On! Summer Camp in Mar Vista. This summer, students came together to explore language and the written word by engaging with various themes, from all corners of the world and all areas of their lives. In the process, students formed meaningful connections with each other and the world around them. Students began their summer by traveling around the globe to explore different arts and cultures through recipes, dance, and holidays. Students had the chance to bring in their own cultural artifacts from home that they could incorporate into their writing. Students then explored nature! We began the week by planting seeds and considering how similar we are to plants--blooming into stronger, bigger, and more exquisite beings. We vowed to protect nature in our Earth Day Promises, created our own autobiographical poems, and devised our own creatures. Students then explored STEAM, or Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics! This week was jam-packed with Animal Behaviorist Day when students interacted with wild animals, Invention Day when students showcased their creative problem-solving, and a field trip to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Students finished their summer by jetting off into the near and distant future. They explored their prospective careers, designed their ideal society through comics, and crafted speeches advocating for positive changes in their community. As we close our 2018 Write On! Summer Camp, we are thrilled to showcase the hard work and creativity of all our students. They have all masterfully integrated their personal experience and zest into their writing.
We hope you enjoy the fresh, exciting new pieces these young writers have conjured. May you find wisdom and joy in this book, and above all, inspiration to see the world with as much curiosity and enthusiasm as our students!
